WHAT IS A UNESCO MODEL?

A Model of UNESCO is a representation on the part of young students from 14 to 19 years old in the Conference of this organism, like representatives of the Member Countries.

It is a unique educative and cultural event of its type in which the young people who participate, besides learning about subjects related to international policy and how UNESCO works, they acquire a global vision that gives them a new perspective of the world in which they live.

That is why, in a previous period to the accomplishment of the Model in which students will have to perform the role of diplomats, they must become qualified on techniques of negotiation and oratory. And, above all, they must understand that the key of this event is in the search of solutions based on the consensus before the problems  that affect all the humanity.

For this Model each country could be represented by a delegation of four or seven students. The amount of students by delegation (four or seven) will depend on the decision of each educative institution. In the delegations of four students, each one will have to prepare the two subjects of the Commission, whereas in the delegations of seven students, each one will have to prepare one subject of the Commission. The other member interacts as ambassador.

The participants take the role of representatives of the countries of the globe, with the mission of reconciling cultures, idiosyncrasies and interests- that, at some moment of their lives, they probably considered irreconcilable. With success and seriousness, the delegates must show the direction of today world, delineating tactical and strategies that benefit their countries and join to the initiative of the rest of the nations. Certainly, the greatest surprise of some of the delegates can be to find themselves as orators, defending positions that had never thought about considering, claiming for what believed to possess and giving answers to the questions they always wanted to ask.

This is the essence of the Model of UNESCO, to achieve that young people discuss and negotiate, learn and teach and that, by means of arguments and consensus, discover that the present and the future of a country and the world are built as a whole.

From the methodological point of view, the formal debates demand oratory, eloquence and mental quickness, demanding study and previous exercise of thought. And the negotiations, center of all the informal activity, do not have a predetermined structure, but without any doubt they require an intensive preparation, persuasion techniques, ability for the leadership and diplomacy. Nevertheless, a Model of UNESCO can be much more than a ‘Social Sciences Olympiad’.

The Model offers, during four days, the possibility of knowing and understanding the interests, idiosyncrasies, cultures and hopes of all the nations of the planet. It is, without doubts, an activity that marks a landmark in the life of every participant.

It would be good to clarify that the Model does not stimulate competition between the members, on the contrary it gives us the clearest vision of what pluralism means. And, as well as UNESCO, it is a symbol that legitimizes -through the participation of all its members- faithfully reflecting reality but with the undeniable mission to approach it towards the intentions and principles of peace and prosperity of the towns.

Note: Accreditation to the participants is granted.

We cherished the hope that our task contributes to strengthen young people’s awareness of the necessity to improve the future of the population, elevating its quality of life and the social development like fundamental factors of the human dignity.

Objectives of the MODEL:

¨       Develop original experiences of teaching and learning.

¨       Know about the problems that concern the world.

¨       Understand the complexity and difficulty of the international relations.

¨       Form independent people, able to understand and to solve problematic situations.

¨       Develop investigation habits and the capacity in the search of solutions.

¨       Promote the respect for the rights of the others to obtain the coexistence peacefully.

¨       Encourage interchange of experiences and communication between teachers and students, acting individually and as a group.

¨       Provide with an ideal scope of motivation for the personal and intellectual development of the young people.

¨       Use the free time to share social and cultural activities.

¨       Strengthen attitudes of tolerance, respect and cooperation by means of motivating experiences.

We considered in our proposal the principles recommended by UNESCO, for the education of century XXI: to learn to know, to learn to do, to learn to coexist and to learn to BE.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN THE INTERNATIONAL MODEL OF UNESCO:

v      The authorities of the educational institutions must designate a teacher in charge of this activity who will receive all the pertinent information concerning this event and who will also be the intermediary between the authorities of the Model and the participant school. In addition the institution must choose which and how many students will participate in the activity.

v      The students will participate in the Model of UNESCO like groups of four or seven members, called delegations. Each delegation represents a State Member of UNESCO.

v      To carry out the enrolment, the forms must be asked for by fax or email. Once completed with the required information, they must be sent to the authorities of the Model.

v      Once the enrolment has been done, all the institutions will receive by email or by mail, the countries assigned to each delegation along with the Program of Qualification that contains the Agenda of  Work, the Schedule of Activities and the basic information on UNESCO, the Model and the subjects to deal with.

v      Spanish is the official language of the MODEL. This offers to foreign students who have this language as a curricular subject an excellent opportunity to expand, to develop and to put in practice their command of this language  in formal and informal situations.
